The Day You Made by Janine Graves

  • I met Janine a few years ago and was swept up by her lyrical and multi-layered poetry. I asked her to share something for today. I hope you enjoy her work.

    The Day You Made

    You were there with me
    the God of my childheart
A friend, a refuge, an escape
    Our surreal dance
magical and flowing of so long ago.

I thought I knew how this day would unfold
    ‘Til another story intrudes
    Unwelcomed. Unwanted. Vehement
And suddenly, knowing You, is more like a trap than it ever was a trust.
I’m ensnared by the hooks and claws of my own questioning
    Wanting. Demanding.
    Belligerence exposed.
    Did we ever dance?
Feet wobble through a reminiscent waltz
Ears prick to the chords struck ever so faintly
    I’m repelled and drawn
My heart longs for You and I am poised to run.
    Such a crazed life
    Restless, blundering, defeated pilgrim
    Silence snatches and taunts.
The graceful dance becomes a pitiful wrestle.
This day is not what it ought to be
What I had hoped it would be.

Fury breaks to a frenetic run
Fight for sanity ruined by the mystical dance I can’t forget
But must push on to flee
Footprints of open-ended questions track a blind sprint.
    Ragged breath arm-wrestles the air.
Eyes, the pale color of surrender
    Relent
    Fling open
To glimpse a scenery of solace
    Resplendent foliage.
    Rich hues christened in dew
    Promise of the morning fulfilled.
    I am caught
    Wrapped in Creation’s cadenced whisper
    Delighted and purposed.
    A sight to behold
    Pause to exalt.
    Perhaps this day
    Even this day
    Held by You

Janine, thank you for sharing your gift with us!

    Much love,

    Tina
